Your Achilles tendon is the tendon that connects calf to heel, which is the largest and strongest tendon in your body. This tendon is heavily used when you walk, run, jump or push up on your toes.

Achilles tendon injuries typically happen to sedentary and out of condition older adults. The primary symptom of Achilles tendinitis is heel pain that is frequently slow to develop. Other symptoms may include:

tendon stiffness

skin over tendon warm

Achilles tendon tenderness

swelling or bump on tendon

dull pain when pushing off your foot

crackling sound when tendon is moved

Your heel pain of Achilles tendonitis may improve a bit when initially moving about, and then it is likely to worsen as you increase your activity.

Couple of the major causes of this type of tendonitis are:

improper footwear

movement on inappropriate surfaces

sudden increase in fitness regime level

repetitive activity involving Achilles tendon

actions that place a lot of stress on calf muscles & Achilles tendon

Some other fitness related, or otherwise, situations that can cause Achilles tendinitis are:

arthritis

overuse

jumping

tibia vara

overweight

overpronation

poor conditioning

weak calf muscles

stairs, hills climbing

tight Achilles tendon

flat or abnormally high arches

inward angulation of heel or forefoot

wearing high heels all the time ~ shortens Achilles tendon

In some heel pain cases, the inflammation of your Achilles tendon may be caused by trauma or an infection near the tendon.

If treated promptly, heel pain of Achilles tendinitis can be alleviated quickly. Left untreated, Achilles tendinitis could cause chronic heel pain or your tendon to rupture. And an Achilles tendon rupture needs surgery to repair.

Ordinarily, the treatment for easing and healing your Achilles heel pain and inflammation symptoms is rest and NSAIDs, such as aspirin, acetaminophen and ibuprofen. With substantial swelling, add ice message, compression bandages and elevation to your treatment protocol.

Rest as in limiting any activity that causes your symptoms to worsen. This means avoiding any forceful and repetitive plantar flexion, but you can continue to lightly use and stretch your tendon.

If your attempts to improve your heel pain symptoms fails, then there are other measures, like:

casting

bracing

crutches

physical therapy

foot insert that elevates heel

walking boot that keeps heel from moving

heel pads, cups to worn in shoes to cushion, support heel

If all else fails, there’s always surgery to remove your inflamed tissue from around the tendon. Cortisone injections are not advisable because they can weaken your tendon.

Many reasons can cause your elbow to hurt, one of the most common being tendinitis. Tendinitis in your elbow is an inflammation or injury to your tendons that attach muscle to bone.

Well known forms of elbow tendinitis are tennis elbow, golfers elbow or little league elbow. However, other overuses of your elbow can result in a similar type tendinitis.

Tennis elbow is usually caused by a poor backhand technique or using a too small racquet’s grip. Signs of tennis elbow include:

wrist weakness

outside elbow pain

wrist extension pain

finger pain against resistance

tenderness around the bone on the outside of your elbow.

Treatment for tennis elbow involves:

ice

rest

elbow brace

gentle stretching

strengthening exercises

To prevent future elbow pain caused by tendinitis you need to:

proper strength training

warm-up adequately in advance

gradual return to full level activity

make technical corrections to your stroke

Golfer’s elbow, or little league elbow, is experiencing pain on the inside of your elbow. Symptoms are:

wrist weakness

inside elbow pain

inside elbow pain with use of a strong grip

Treatment and prevention for this type of elbow tendinitis is the same as it is for tennis elbow.

Other causes for your elbow pain may be:

strains

sprains

bursitis

arthritis

fractures

dislocations

Treatment for these will depend on which is causing your pain in the elbow.

Tendinitis and bursitis are conditions involving soft tissue inflammation around muscles and bones. They most often flare up in your shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee, or ankle joints.

Tendinitis and bursitis are different in that one involves a tendon and the later a bursa.

Tendinitis is inflammation of a tendon. Your tendons are flexible bands of fibrous tissue that connects muscles to bones. They play a vital role in the muscles cause for movement.

The location of the tendon inflammation is what makes the difference in if pain is involved with a given type of movement. This why you may only feel pain when moving a joint in a certain way.

Bursitis is the pain felt when your bursa is inflamed. Your bursae are the cushioning fluid-filled sacs between bones and other moving parts, such as muscles, tendons or skin.

Inflammation is an increased fluid in these bursae, located throughout your body. You will experience palpable pain and tenderness right in the bursitis inflicted joint area.

Tendinitis and bursitis are considered chronic, or in another word continual. Pain and inflammation reduction treatment include rest, compression, elevation, heat and anti-inflammatory medicines. Limiting you activity involving the affected joint is recommended to help in healing and further injury prevention.

Some lifestyle routines to help prevent tendinitis or bursitis include:

cushion the affected joint

don’t sit still for long periods

strengthen muscles around the joint

warm up or stretch before physical activity

take breaks from repetitive tasks regularly and often

practice good posture and position the body properly when going about daily activities

approach new activities or exercise regimens slowly by gradually increasing physical demands

As always, prevent the preventable, and your knowing the difference between tendinitis and bursitis helps discover which lifestyle routines need adjustment.
