Metatarsalgia is pain, tenderness and inflammation in the ball of your foot, or metatarsal. High heal wearers, runners and other high impact sports enthusiasts put excessive stress on this area, that may result in this type of foot injury.

Metatarsalgia sure can put a crimp in your walking style, and this ball of foot pain may come along with other symptoms like:

  • tingling toes
  • toe numbness
  • sharp toe pain
  • shooting toe pain
  • flexed foot pain increase
  • area feels like its bruised
  • walking on pebbles sensation

Your painful, aching, burning, inflamed metatarsal can strike suddenly, but normally it develops over time.

The cause for metatarsalgia may be attributable to:

Some treatment remedies that may help get you back on your foot:

  • arch supports
  • metatarsal pads
  • wear proper footwear
  • shock absorbing insoles
  • OTC pain & inflammation relievers ~ ibuprofen, naproxen, aspirin

Choosing the right shoes has nothing to do with style and everything to do with the intended use, especially fitness activities. Also, ensure substantial padding offered in the metatarsal, or ball of foot area.

The most common cause of muscle soreness, pain and cramping is overuse. Whereas, lack of use is often the cause for muscle atrophy. Muscle atrophy is wasting or loss of muscle.

However, in some cases these muscle problems are not caused by over nor under use. Some other causes for muscle soreness and pain you may be familiar with:

  • lupus
  • fibromyalgia
  • tension/stress
  • electrolyte imbalance
  • certain drugs ~ cocaine, statins, ACE inhibitors
  • infections ~ influenza, Lyme disease, trichinosis

Causes for muscle cramps beyond overuse are:

  • dehydration
  • lack of dietary minerals
  • body depletion of minerals
  • not enough blood getting to your muscles

Some atrophy occurs normally with aging. Other causes, besides aging and lack of use, involve:

  • injury
  • stroke
  • osteoarthritis
  • rheumatoid arthritis
  • diabetic neuropathy
  • peripheral neuropathy
  • corticosteroid therapy
  • long period of immobilization
  • amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS/Lou Gehrig’s disease)

Generally, a daily routine involving some type of physical fitness and balanced nutrition minimizes your likelihood of experiencing soreness, pain, cramps and atrophy muscle tissue issues.
